Surviving Giant Centipedes in Idols of Ash

Idols of Ash feels like falling into a nightmare that never ends. Built by Leafy Games, this indie horror title drops the player into a suffocating abyss filled with ash, ruins, and something crawling behind. The design is minimal, yet sharp as a blade. No wasted systems. Just tension.

The experience leans into cosmic horror. Darkness presses in. Sound carries fear better than visuals. It is not about what is seen, but what is heard. Idols of Ash free and Idols of Ash online versions, have drawn attention for delivering pure pressure in under an hour. One wrong move feels like slipping on a wet edge above nothingness.

How to Play Idols of Ash

  • The goal is simple. Reach the bottom. The execution is not.
  • Players descend through vertical ruins using a grappling hook. Movement flows with momentum: no stamina, no fall damage, no mercy. The deeper the descent, the tighter the routes become. Meanwhile, a massive centipede hunts relentlessly, forcing constant motion.
  • Each swing matters. Each decision shapes survival. The gameplay feels like balancing on a thread while something sharp crawls closer.

Control

  • PC = Mouse aim -> Left click shoot hook -> Swing with momentum; WASD move; Space jump.
  • Mobile = Tap aim -> Hold to hook -> Release to swing; Virtual joystick move; Tap jump

I thought I’d just play for 30 minutes, but ended up losing 4 hours of my life

That centipede is pure nightmare fuel. Why does it breathe like that?? Insects don't have lungs, man! Hearing that clicking sound in the dark while trying to hook onto a ledge made my palms so sweaty I almost dropped my mouse. The First Kiln mode is absolutely insane, I’m still stuck there lol. If you hate bugs, stay away from this one.

Honestly, the grappling hook in this game is top-tier. I’ve played a lot of physics-based platformers, but the momentum in Idols of Ash feels so heavy and real. Only downside is that weird invisible wall bug when the ash gets thin—it ruined my speedrun twice! Still, once you get the hang of the swinging, it’s hard to stop. 8/10.
